What Are Single Vision Stock Lenses?

Single vision stock lenses (often referred to in the optical industry as Finished Single Vision or FSV lenses) are pre-manufactured, mass-produced optical lenses designed to correct vision at a single focal distance (distance, intermediate/computer, or near/reading).

Unlike custom-surfaced (surfaced/Rx) lenses that are ground to order in an optical laboratory based on individual patient parameters, stock lenses are manufactured ahead of time in large batches across a standard grid of sphere, cylinder, and axis combinations.

Core Characteristics

1. Pre-Finished Power & Coatings
Both the front and back optical curves are fully molded, polished, and set at the factory.

Most stock lenses come pre-coated with surface treatments (such as hard scratch-resistant coatings, anti-reflective (AR) coatings, hydrophobic layers, or UV protection).

2. Single Focal Range
Like all single-vision lenses, they feature a uniform power intended to correct one field of view (myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism). They do not contain multiple visual zones like progressive or bifocal lenses.

3. Ready for Edging Only
Because the prescription optical power is already finished across the lens blank, the retail optical lab only needs to perform edging (tracing and cutting the outer perimeter to match the patient’s chosen frame shape).

Stock Lenses vs. Custom Surfaced (Rx) Lenses

Feature Single Vision Stock Lenses (FSV) Single Vision Custom Surfaced Lenses
Manufacturing Mass-produced in bulk to fixed prescription grids. Individually ground/surfaced point-by-point per order.
Turnaround Time Fast (often same-day or 1–2 days) because lenses are kept in inventory. Slower (requires lab processing, surfacing, and post-coating).
Prescription Range Covers low-to-moderate standard prescriptions (e.g., sphere powers within ±4.00D or ±6.00D and standard astigmatism levels). Accommodates extreme high-power prescriptions, complex prism needs, or unusual cylinder axes.
Cost Cost-effective due to economies of scale. Higher cost due to custom labor and processing.
Customization Standard base curves; limited ability to adjust for frame position, tilt, or wrap. Highly customizable to frame dimensions, vertex distance, and pantoscopic tilt.

Common Materials & Technologies

Stock lenses are available in standard industry materials, including:
Standard Plastic (1.50 / CR-39) – Best for low prescriptions.
Polycarbonate / Trivex – Lightweight, highly impact-resistant; ideal for kids and rimless frames.
Mid- and High-Index (1.56, 1.60, 1.67, 1.74) – Thinner and lighter profiles for stronger prescriptions.
Modern Freeform FSV – Premium stock categories (such as ZEISS ClearView FSV) incorporate digital freeform designs directly into mass-produced stock lenses to reduce peripheral distortion and lens thickness.

When Are They Used?

Stock single vision lenses are the standard choice for:
1. Patients with straightforward, mild-to-moderate distance or reading prescriptions.
2. Fast-turnaround orders or emergency replacements.
3. Budget-conscious eyewear lines where high optical quality can be maintained without custom lab surcharges.
